The Mayurbhanji Chhau style lends itself to innovation and experimentation without loosing its inherent characteristic and dynamism. The eloquence of the style lies in a form of expression which utilises the entire body as vehicle for conveying emotions and characterizations.
Both the traditional and the extension of it into different territories will be illustrated during the Lecture Demonstration through two presentations; the first item, Shiva Tandava, intends to show the style as it is adopted in the context of a traditional theme and the second, Echo and Narcissus, how the style moulds itself to suit a different subject and music, in this case a Greek myth. The practical demonstration in between will illustrate the transition from the one to the other.
A short documentary shot during the Chaitra Parva rituals in Baripada intends to give an idea of the ambience where Chhau originated and it is performed.
