Bangalore’s World-Famous Semi-Deluxe Writing Program sponsors a monthly curated talk called Speaking of the City, at Shoonya (Lalbagh Road). Writers, artists, journalists, scholars, architects, scientists, entrepreneurs, historians, geographers, activists or anyone who has worked on Bangalore will be invited to speak of this city that we all inhabit.

The first talk in our lecture series, in July 2017, was with Ramachandra Guha, and was followed by a session with Vivek Shanbhag, both of which pulled in big crowds. Sugata Srinivasaraju thrilled us in October with his thoughts on growing up in the city and how it has affected his views on writing – and his work as an editor, translator, and top journalist. The fourth talk featured internationally bestselling and critically-acclaimed Lavanya Sankaran, who shared her thoughts with us in an exclusive event.

This time, we are proud to host Maya Jayapal, historian of Bangalore, and author of Bangalore: Story of a City. Maya will be in conversation with the writer Radhika Chadha.

We are also really happy to go back to our beloved local literary institution, the Bookworm, where the talk will be held. We are grateful for their support 🙂

|| Speaker – Maya Jayapal ||

Maya Jayapal is the author of Bangalore: Story of a City, published in 1997, which was one of the first books to trace the history of Bangalore and connect it to the city’s late 20th-century present. It documented the city’s landmarks and people, its appeal to migrants and what could be done to better preserve its past. Her most recent book, Bangalore: Roots and Beyond, was published in 2014 and includes significant original research and rare photographs of an old Bangalore. She has also published books on the histories of Singapore and Jakarta. Mrs. Jayapal has written extensively about travel and the human condition for numerous publications including The Hindu and the Deccan Herald.
