Part 1 – Introduction, Exposure and Design Practice
Part 1 of the workshop aims to introduce participants to the world of lighting design via exposure to gear, a short performance and critical design discussions. The first day (20 Jan / 27 Jan) will mainly explore how lights commonly used in live performance can be manipulated as well as some basic design theory. This will be followed by a short performance and designs for it will be followed by discussion. The second day (21 Jan / 28 Jan) the performance will be revisited and final drafts of designs will be made by each participant and discussed.

Part 2 – Execution of Design
A completely practice-based session where participants will be realising their designs in real time. Each participant will be given 3-4 hours to use the equipment and bring their design to life as well as observe the working of other participants to take away experiential and external learnings.

Part 3 – Documentation
A short session where participants will work on documenting their design in a manner that can be shared almost anywhere in the world.

Part 4 – Evolution
This is a lab where a basic setup will be available to test and use new ways of lighting control as well as a basic introduction to making your own miniature LED lights.

Pritham Kumar is known by many performing-arts practitioners as a lighting designer. He is self taught and has been working in the field of light design for close to two decades. His work has taken him to many countries and sometimes his work even travels in lieu of him. He is keen to pass on all of his knowledge of the field to grow a new generation of lighting designers. He is now making explorations in technical consulting for new spaces as well as exploring new technologies. He sees a future where design plays a more collaborative part in performance.

Recent works include Rukmini Vijayakumar‘s ‘The Dark Lord’, Atul Kumar‘s ‘Khwaab Sa’ and Deepika Arwind‘s ‘A Brief History of your Hair’.
