1st & 2nd Dec | 10.30am – 4.30pm

John’s approach to performance, ‘‘Self-With-Others” is a psychophysical approach which encourages the bringing together of mind and body into every action, the unifying of thought and action. It is based on a set of clear principles – the most important of which is the need for performers to find deep pleasure in their work. If you are not enjoying your work, you are not doing it properly.

ABOUT THE EVENT

This Masterclass will offer the participants a foundational approach to understanding:
* The use of their bodies in performance.
* The relationship between the discipline of thought and discipline of action.
* Sensitivity to collaborative working.
* Creative strategies for the creation of live solo and ensemble performance.

ABOUT JOHN BRITTON

John Britton is an internationally renowned director and teacher of physical performance. For over twenty years he has been developing a unique approach to training performers across disciplines, an approach he calls ‘Self-With-Others’. The work is primarily offered to professional performers – through the work of The [Duende School of Ensemble Physical Theatre] and at institutions such as The Swedish Ballet Academy and Javeriana University, Bogota, Colombia. John was previously Senior Lecturer in Performance at Huddersfield University (UK) where he ran a ground-breaking MA in Ensemble Physical Theatre based on his training methods. In 2013 he published ‘Encountering Ensemble’ (Bloomsbury/Methuen) – a core text on ensemble and physical training which is now used around the world, and in 2017 ‘Climbing The Mountain: A Performer’s Journey Into Presence’.

As a director his work is seen all over the world – including recent productions at NSD (Delhi), in Mumbai, Seattle, Athens and Bogota. Always his work is based in the live dynamic presence of the performer’s body.

John cites the core influences on his work as being the tradition of European Laboratory Theatre that grew from Stanislavsky and Meyerhold and was further developed by Grotowski. Significant contemporary practitioners such as Nunez, Barba and Zarrilli are also important to his work. The other key influence comes from the developments in dance improvisation that emerged from America in the 1950s, especially as further developed by Al Wunder in Australia. Self With Others is the heart of John’s work as a teacher, director and performer. He uses this approach to train existing companies, professional performers, students and others in groups and individually.
