Kalaripayattu (sometimes shortened as Kalari) is an Indian martial art and fighting system that originated in Kerala and practiced by warriors of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There is a mention about Tulunadan Kalari in the ballads of Kerala. In Kerala, the warriors belonged to all castes and religions. It is considered by some to be the oldest martial art still in existence, with its origin dating back to the 3rd century BCE

In this 3 month intensive, participants will be introduced to the very basic techniques viz., Chuvadukal, Vadivukal, Kaalukal, and Kalari Tozhuttu(Kalari Salutation). These techniques are the very foundation for any practitioner who wants to learn the art form in a proper manner for long term. The focus will be on learning these techniques in a wholesome manner with focus on improving the body’s strength and flexibility and the attention span of the human mind.

ABOUT THE TEACHER:
Nikhil Varagiri is an active Kalari practitioner. He trained for 8 years under the guidance of Guru Lakshmanan Gurukkal, Guru Shatrughnan Gurukkal, and Guru Radhika Gurukkal at Hindustan Kalari Sangam, Calicut under the patronage of Guru Veerasree Gurukkal.
He was the resident teacher at Kalarigram, Auroville for 5 years while also conducting workshops for children and adults in all major cities around India. He is also the protagonist of the short film “Ten Thousand” by Faraway Collective.
