The experimental documentary, The Wonder Doctor, by visual artist Pamela Breda narrates the story of Stefan Theiler, a Swiss “Movie Doctor”, who wants to transform the world into a better place via the knowledge of movies that people can watch to better their individual and collective lives.

Stefan lives in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, where since 2009 he has been running a dvd rental store. He is daily visited by locals as well as passers-by, and he performs what he calls “lm therapy” to everyone who wants to solve their individual or collective problems. Furthermore, Stefan started a political engagment and was a candidate for major of the city of Bern in 2016 and as a Prefect for the region in 2017. He was unsuccessful on both occasions.

The director met Stefan by chance in 2016 and decided to go back to Switzerland to realize a movie that tells his story.

Born in 1982, in Vittorio Veneto (Italy), Pamela Breda lives and works between Venice and London. In 2012 she received her MA in Visual Arts from IUAV University, Italy. Her work has been exhibited in international venues in Venice, London, Santander, Salzburg, Trondheim, and in institutions such as Karlsruhe Kunsthalle, Fondation Francois Schneider, La Casa Encendida, Foundation Botin, Foundation Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice Architecture Biennale, and Moscow Biennale of Young Art.

Her main area of research is focused on cultural visual tropes and traditions – on the contingency of the artistic process and on its multiple outcomes. She analyzes western imaginaries connected with culturally and socially-engaged contexts of production and reception. Starting from the analysis on the relationship between power and knowledge and between artwork and the
narrative fiction implied in it, she researches the visual-cognitive values ascribed to the contemporary image exploited as a narration.
