Devising Theatre: A Masterclass
By Aruna Ganesh Ram
Feb 8 & Feb 9
9.30am – 5.30pm
Fee: INR 2400.

What is Devising?

It’s a way of working. It is a way of making work, by putting yourself out there – in every way.

It is a way of bringing ideas into the rehearsal room and allowing ourselves the freedom to play and to explore where that idea can go and how it can become a performance moment.

It is a way of story making. A way of meaning making. You put some colours, shapes, textures and patterns together and before you know, an artwork may be brewing. Devising is similar – you put text, movement, poetry, visuals, music and speech together and before you know, you’ve started DEVISING A PERFORMANCE.

Devising is about courage. It is about getting up from your place and moving into the space to actually do something, to say something or to even remain silent – but you have to start. And that requires creative courage.

Devising is about being OK even when you’re not the most important person in the room. Devising is not really about people but about the propositions that are made.

These come together and then comes rhythm, composition, narratives, characters – well it’s a very soulful way to make theatre. Everybody in the room is an ingredient. And we’re there to prepare something bigger than all of us. Something of relevance. Something that questions the status quo. Something that you enjoy and care about deeply!

Who is this workshop for?
It is for the creative practitioner. It is for the person who will use an opportunity to tell a story and to influence or inspire an audience. It is for actors who want to go beyond the script and explore new ways of making work. It is for anyone interested in developing a way to making exciting performances.
